This is an anonymous Chinese ink-bamboo, in which a straight-rising stalk stands neatly within the frame. In Chinese literati painting, bamboo has symbolized upright integrity, and its meaning rings true in any land. In this painting I see the wisdom of the joint. Bamboo does not grow straight up all at once; it forms a joint, pauses, then grows again. Because of that joint, it does not break even though hollow within. A person's growth is the same. Rather than rushing without rest, to grow by forming joints and tempering oneself goes farther.
