This is an anonymous Chinese painting in which scholars stand before a towering waterfall, gazing at the cascade. The deep contemplation of Chinese landscape painting is held in it, yet the resonance the scene conveys is the same in any land. In this painting I see the worth of stopping to gaze. The waterfall falls without resting for an instant, yet a person, before it, halts his steps instead. When we quietly gaze at something ceaselessly in motion, the heart, on the contrary, grows still. Thought deepens in facing the flow rather than chasing it.
