Characters such as filial piety and loyalty become images, and books and writing implements stack neatly across the screen. An unnamed artisan brought learning and virtue into the home in a form the eye could see. To paint a word as an image is a vow to face an abstract value every single day. What hangs on the wall was not decoration but the shape of a life one wished to live. What we keep beside us is a quiet answer to the question of what we wish to become.
