This is a Japanese bird-and-flower painting that Yamamoto Baiitsu drew on silk. Across the long-hanging surface, a flowering branch and a bird are placed neatly. My heart goes to this neatness. Brushwork that does not try to show off its skill but calmly takes its proper place instead settles the viewing heart. There are times when calmly keeping one's place lasts longer than crying out loudly. A composed heart is itself a composed painting.
