Books and a Scholar's Possessions

🖼 ONE LINE FROM THIS PAINTING

"Why are books, seen from many directions, gathered onto a single shelf?"

📝ONGO's Reflection

The scholar's-shelf painting holds shelves full of books, brushes, inkstones, and objects together, not from one viewpoint but from many angles at once. One compartment seems seen from above, another head-on, and though they do not align, the whole rests in a strange stability. It is painted not as the eye sees, but as the mind knows. I see, here, that an eye which gathers what was seen from many positions holds a thing more wholly than an eye fixed in one place.

Do not stay with a single judgment; look once more, from another position, at the same matter you face today.
