This is a folding screen by the Japanese painter Sesson Shukei, in which a monkey reaches out its hand to seize the moon reflected on the water. The moon in the water is only a shape and cannot be taken in hand. The humor of Japanese ink painting and a Zen realization are held together, yet its teaching reaches anyone. In this painting I see a caution against vain attachment. We sometimes take what has no substance to be real and chase it our whole lives. Before reaching out a hand, we must first see whether it is the moon or the moon's shadow.
