The character 出 is a pictograph depicting a foot emerging from the ground. In the oracle bone script it rendered a foot pointing upward and advancing out beyond the ground, and in the bronze and small-seal scripts the lower 凵 more clearly represented the ground while the upper element gave shape to a footstep going outward. It was used to express the act of advancing outward or appearing in the world. As time passed, the form of the character was simplified, but the meanings of "to come out" and "to go out" remained unchanged.
