📖 Origin

The character 出 is a pictograph depicting a foot emerging from the ground. In the oracle bone script it rendered a foot pointing upward and advancing out beyond the ground, and in the bronze and small-seal scripts the lower 凵 more clearly represented the ground while the upper element gave shape to a footstep going outward. It was used to express the act of advancing outward or appearing in the world. As time passed, the form of the character was simplified, but the meanings of "to come out" and "to go out" remained unchanged.

🔍 Structure

凵 + 止 = 出 (the early form showed a foot emerging above the ground)

出 combines the "凵" representing the ground below with a foot (a variant of 止) going outward above it, forming the meaning "to go out." In form it appears as if two "凵" were stacked, but this captures the dynamic image of a foot pushing off the ground and emerging. Contrasted with "入" (to enter), meaning "to go inward," these two characters are fascinating in how they visually and clearly show the essence of directionality.

🏛 Philosophy

Confucianism

In Confucianism, "出" places importance on the act of an individual cultivating virtue and "entering public service" (出仕) to put the Way into practice in the world. Mencius said, "When the gentleman comes forth into the world to practice the Way, it is for the sake of the people," emphasizing that the act of stepping forth serves the common good. This connects to the duty of the intellectual to contribute to society without concealing one's talents and learning.

Buddhism

In Buddhism, "出" is used in the concept of the "transcendent" (出世間) — "going out" (出) from the worldly realm (世間) full of affliction and suffering, and advancing toward the state of liberation. It embodies the seeker's effort to escape the reality that "all is suffering" (一切皆苦) and move toward the world of nirvana. This carries a transcendent meaning of pursuing freedom and enlightenment, freed from the bonds of the mundane world.

This is a metaphor that once the gentleman has cultivated virtue, his renown spreads of itself in every direction; it means that his influence reaches the world even without his stepping forth.

Myeongsim Bogam

口不出傲 不言過 (Gu-bul-chul-o bul-eon-gwa). Let the mouth utter no arrogant words, and do not carelessly speak of others' faults. This emphasizes the importance and prudence of speech, teaching that one must think deeply about the effect that words leaving the mouth will bring.
