For the character 呂 there are two main theories: that it depicts the segments of the human backbone, and that it depicts a flute. In the oracle-bone and bronze scripts it appears as two 口-like shapes joined vertically, suggesting the vertebrae of the spine. In later ages it came to be used chiefly for surnames and place-names, or to denote musical pitch, and its original pictographic meaning gradually faded. By the small-seal script it had settled into a form nearly identical to that of today.

Another example is 鋁 (aluminum), which adds the metal radical 金 to 呂 to denote aluminum.

I heard that companions abound on Penglai's isle, / yet alone I seek the green sea, recalling years let slip away. / Where the pine gate is closed, clouds rise upon the couch; / when the herb garden runs wild, the crane stays in its nest. / Returning to my old village, no old acquaintance remains; / coming drunk, I chant aloud and raise a lofty song. / You now are already an official among the clouds— / no need to hear again the waves above the Han.
This poem was sent by the Tang poet Qian Qi to his friend Recorder Lü. Here 呂 denotes the friend's surname, and the poet portrays the noble figure of a friend who has left the secular world to dwell in seclusion and cultivate the Way. The poem expresses, with quiet composure, both respect for the friend's present life and a lingering attachment to the world of dust.
