📖 Origin

The character 水 (water) is a pictograph depicting the flow of a river or stream. In the oracle bone script it rendered a winding current with elegant simplicity, and in the bronze and small-seal scripts the form of the waves became more regular and symbolic. The modern character 水 derives from these early forms, preserving the image of three streams flowing together to express the very essence of water. It stands as living evidence of how vital the ancients considered water to be.

🔍 Structure

水 is a pictograph that directly imitates the form of flowing water. Rather than being a combination of particular components, it constitutes a complete character in its own right.

It is the character that most directly portrays the shape of water, conveying meaning by its form alone. When used as a radical, its shape changes to "氵" (the three-dots-water radical); for example, it appears in countless water-related characters such as 江 (river) and 海 (sea), clarifying their meaning. Through such transformations we glimpse the character's capacity to combine with others and generate new meaning.

🏛 Philosophy

Taoism

In Taoism, the idea expressed in Laozi's phrase "the highest good is like water" (上善若水) regards the nature of water as the supreme good. Water benefits all things yet does not contend, and it dwells in the low places that everyone else disdains. This reveals a path toward the Dao through the virtues of humility, flexibility, and acceptance.

Confucianism

In Confucianism, Confucius said, "The wise delight in water; the benevolent delight in mountains" (知者樂水, 仁者樂山), declaring that the wise love water. Just as water ceaselessly changes and flows while benefiting all things, the wise person is always learning, changing, and exerting a good influence on those around them. The cycle and flow of water connect to the gentleman's unending self-cultivation.

高山流水 (고산유수)

高山流水 (고산유수): "Lofty mountains and flowing water." It refers to meeting a true friend who truly understands you, or serves as a metaphor for exquisite music. It originates from the tale of Bo Ya and Zhong Ziqi, master zither players of China's Spring and Autumn period, who deeply understood each other's music.

水魚之交 (수어지교)

水魚之交 (수어지교): "The bond of water and fish." It is a metaphor for an intimate, inseparable relationship. Used to describe the relationship between Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang of Shu Han, it expresses that each was indispensable to the other.

It originates from the tale of Jiang Taigong of the Zhou dynasty, whose wife, surnamed Ma, left him in poverty and wished to return when he rose to prominence; he poured out water and refused her.

💬 Proverbs

Laozi (Tao Te Ching)

上善若水. 水善利萬物而不爭, 處衆人之所惡, 故幾於道. (Sang-seon-yak-su. Su-seon-ri-man-mul-i-bu-jaeng, cheo-jung-in-ji-so-o, go-gi-eo-do.) — The highest good is like water. Water benefits all things yet does not contend, and it dwells in the low places that the multitude disdains; therefore it is close to the Dao. This passage explains the essence of the Dao through the humility and selfless nature of water.

Confucius (Analects)

知者樂水, 仁者樂山. 知者動, 仁者靜. 知者樂, 仁者壽. (Ji-ja-yo-su, in-ja-yo-san. Ji-ja-dong, in-ja-jeong. Ji-ja-rak, in-ja-su.) — The wise delight in water, the benevolent delight in mountains. The wise are active, the benevolent are still. The wise are joyful, the benevolent are long-lived. This shows that the fluidity and ever-changing nature of water connect to the wise person's ceaseless spirit of inquiry.

🎭 K-Culture

Tradition

In Korean traditional culture, water holds great significance as a source of life and a symbol of purification. In many ceremonies such as traditional weddings and ancestral rites, water was used to wash away impurity and pray for cleanliness, and the culture of gardens with ponds treated water as a key element in the pursuit of harmony with nature and aesthetic value.

🌍 World Culture

World Religion and Myth

In ancient Egypt the Nile was worshipped as the lifeline and a sacred being, and in Hinduism the Ganges is regarded as a holy river that washes away sins, with pilgrimage and bathing customs. Likewise, as in the great flood myth of Mesopotamia or the river Styx of Greek mythology, water carries deep meaning across world cultures as the cradle of civilization and, at times, a powerful symbol of judgment and purification.

🤖 AI Era Lesson

"Across every age, water (水) offers us an enduring lesson. Just as water flows to the lowest places and moistens all things, technology should advance humbly, in a direction that supports and benefits human life. Moreover, the supple flow of water and its ceaseless change suggest that we must continually adapt to a rapidly shifting world and keep seeking new ways to solve problems. Flowing freely like water, yet nurturing life within that flow — such wisdom can help us build a more inclusive and sustainable future."

📜 Classical Poetry (1)

將進酒

李白 (Li Bai) (701–762) — Tang

君不見黃河之水天上來, 奔流到海不復回.

Do you not see — the waters of the Yellow River descend from heaven, rushing onward to the sea, never to return.

This poem, part of Li Bai's "Bring in the Wine," sings of the waters of the Yellow River flowing down from heaven to the sea, never to return, as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of life and the irreversibility of time. Here 水 symbolizes the unstoppable flow of time and the single, never-repeated chance that is a human life. Through the grand, unhindered flow of water, it is a celebrated passage that awakens us to the finitude of human existence and the preciousness of the present moment.
