海

📖 Origin
The character '海' (hae) is a phono-semantic compound combining the water radical 水, which carries the meaning of water, with 每 (mae), which indicates its sound. Although it does not appear in oracle-bone script, it was used in senses related to water from the bronze-inscription period onward, and in small-seal script the present form of the water radical became fixed. 每 implies not only the sound but also the meaning of "great," thereby expressing the vastness of the sea, and this form carried through to today's regular script without major change.
🔍 Structure
水 (water) + 每 (mae, "every") = 海 (sea)
海 is a phono-semantic compound joining 水 (氵), meaning water, with 每 (mae), which indicates the sound. 每 originally depicted a mother's headdress and so carries the implication of "great," much as a mother is "great." 海 therefore means a great body of water, and when compared with other water-related characters such as 湖 (lake) or 江 (river), it all the more emphasizes the vastness of the sea.
🏛 Philosophy
Taoism
In Taoism, the sea is seen as a being that symbolizes the fundamental flow and harmony of all things. Just as every river flows into the sea, all things ultimately return to the embrace of the Dao — an expression of the thought of effortless naturalness (wu wei). It is said that "the Dao is like a sea that gives birth to and nurtures all things," emphasizing its boundless capacity to embrace.
Confucianism
In Confucianism, the sea is used as a metaphor for the virtues a noble person should possess — namely tolerance, profundity, and patience. Just as the sea receives many streams, the noble person embraces all things and ceaselessly purifies himself, and there is much to be learned from this image of the sea. The saying "the virtue of the noble person is like the sea, broad and deep" expresses this well.

🤖 AI Era Lesson
"'海' means the boundless sea, and this touches upon the essence of how the human mind explores a limitless world of knowledge. Just as the sea embraces every river, the pursuit of learning takes in diverse information, fuses it, and opens new horizons. Yet just as one cannot fathom the depths of the sea, we must recognize that the future is likewise a continuous succession of unpredictable possibilities and challenges. As we respect and seek to understand the sea, so too should we become wise navigators who, amid all progress, never lose sight of human values."

觀滄海 (Viewing the Boundless Sea)
Cao Cao (155–220) — Kingdom of Wei
東臨碣石 以觀滄海 水何澹澹 山島竦峙 樹木叢生 百草豐茂 秋風蕭瑟 洪波湧起 日月之行 若出其中 星漢燦爛 若出其裡 幸甚至哉 歌以詠志
Eastward I climb Jieshi Mountain to gaze upon the boundless sea. How gently the waters ripple, while peaks and islands rise up sheer. The trees grow thick and lush, and all the grasses flourish in abundance. The autumn wind blows desolate, and mighty waves surge up. The coursing of the sun and moon seems to issue from within it; the radiance of the Milky Way seems to well up from inside it. How fortunate, how joyful indeed — I sing this song to voice my will.
Cao Cao composed this work after unifying the north, climbing Jieshi Mountain and gazing upon the vast sea. Depicting a spirit grand enough to seem to embrace the sun, moon, and even the stars within the sea's majestic and boundless image, his expansive ambition to take the whole world into his arms and his heroic spirit are vividly revealed through the character '海.'
