1 Origin and Evolution

The oldest form of 天 appears in oracle bone script (14th century BCE). It showed a person standing with arms spread (大) with an emphasized head above. "What is above a person" means heaven. In bronze script (11th century BCE), the dot evolved into a horizontal stroke (一). Through seal script, today's 天 was formed — 3,400 years of evolution.

2 Structure Analysis

一(one) + 大(big) = 天(heaven)

Big (大) is a pictograph of a person with arms spread. Add a stroke above? The biggest, widest thing above a person — heaven. Interestingly, if you put 一 below 大, you get 立 (stand) — a person standing under heaven.

3 天 in Eastern Philosophy

Confucianism

Confucius: "Heaven gave me virtue." Mencius: "Knowing Heaven's will is wisdom" — why age 50 is called "knowing heaven's decree."

Taoism

Buddhism

In Buddhism, 天 means the heavenly realm (天上界). The highest of six realms but still within the cycle of rebirth — "even heaven is impermanent."
