📜 Name Through History
📖 Origin of the Hanja
Korea's only landlocked province in the central peninsula. The hanja "忠淸" combines one character each from the two great old cities Chungju (忠州) and Cheongju (淸州). Unified as Chungcheong-do in 1314 under Goryeo, split north-south in 1896. The provincial capital Cheongju is the birthplace of Jikji (1377), the world's oldest extant book printed with movable metal type — predating Gutenberg by 78 years.
