📖 Origin of the Hanja
The volcanic island province south of the Korean peninsula. The hanja "濟州" means "the province reached by crossing (the sea)". Originally the independent kingdom of Tamna (耽羅) from the 1st century until 1404. Renamed Jeju in 1229 under Goryeo. Elevated to Korea's sole Special Self-Governing Province in 2006. Mount Halla (1,947m), UNESCO World Natural Heritage (2007). 13 million visitors/year — Korea's gateway to Japan, China, and Southeast Asia.
