📖 Origin of the Hanja
Elevated to Korea's 4th Special Self-Governing Province on January 18, 2024 — the most recent change in Korea's administrative map. The hanja "全羅" combines the first characters of Jeonju (全州) and Naju (羅州), formed in 1018 under Goryeo. Jeonju was both the capital of Later Baekje (892-936) and the ancestral seat of the Jeonju Yi clan — Joseon's founding dynasty. Home to Jeonju Hanok Village and Jeonju bibimbap, the spiritual heart of Korean cuisine.
