마한(馬韓) — 고대 전라도 — 1018 전라남도 — 1896

📖 Origin of the Hanja

The southernmost province of the Korean peninsula. Until Gwangju's separation as a metropolitan city in 1986, Gwangju was the capital; the provincial seat moved to Namak (Muan) in 2005. The Dadohae (多島海, "many-island sea") archipelago contains roughly half of Korea's 2,000+ islands. Haenam's "Land's End" (土末) marks the peninsula's southern tip. Strong literary heritage — Dasan Jeong Yak-yong spent 18 years of exile in Gangjin and Haenam. Namdo (南道) cuisine is Korea's gastronomic peak.
