📖 Origin of the Hanja
The hanja "運" depicts a chariot (車) on a path (辶) — transport, fate. "動" combines weight (重) with force (力) — to move. "選" combines walking (辶) with offering (巽) — to select and send. "手" means hand, extended to specialist. 運動選手 = "the selected hand of motion". The spiritual root is Silla's Hwarang and the Five Secular Commandments — "no retreat in battle". Sohn Kee-chung (1936 Berlin marathon gold) and Kim Yuna (2010 Vancouver figure gold) carried this spirit into the modern Olympics.
"The 運 in 運動 means "fate" — motion meeting an inherited body. An athlete is neither pure effort nor pure talent, but the place where the two meet."
