設 (to arrange) + 計 (to calculate) + 士 (scholar) — "the scholar who calculates and arranges"

📖 Origin of the Hanja

The hanja "設" combines speech (言) with ceremony (殳) — to arrange, to establish. "計" combines speech (言) with ten (十) — to count alternatives. "士" is a scholar-craftsman. 設計士 = "one who calculates needs and arranges the answer". Korean design traces back to Joseon court painters, porcelain potters, and ceremonial designers. Today's Korean design (BTS, Samsung, Hyundai) inherits the spirit of "anticipating the user's heart" — the foundation of East Asian craft.

"設計 = to calculate (計) and arrange (設). A designer does not make — but anticipates."
