Astonishingly, for a long time people had no zero! Look at Roman numerals (I, V, X, C) — no zero. So writing big numbers was truly inconvenient. People thought, "why write down nothing?" Then about 1,500 years ago, mathematicians in India had a revolutionary idea: write "nothing" as a number too! This idea of zero spread across the world through Arab merchants.

3💡 The Genius's Discovery

Zero's true greatness lies in "place value." We write the same digit with different values by position — 3 is 3, but 30 puts the 3 in the "tens place" to mean 30. But when the tens place is empty, like in "three hundred and five," what fills that empty slot? Zero! Write 305 and the 0 says exactly "the tens place is empty." Without zero you couldn't tell 35 from 305 from 3005. Zero is the cleverest number — it shows "nothing" while "holding the place" for other digits. Computers handling everything with 0 and 1 was possible only because zero existed.
