Why Does the Speed of Light Never Change

Whether you run toward it or stand still, light always approaches at the same speed.

💡 TL;DR

Why Does the Speed of Light Never Change — Before this fact I linger long. We took time and space for the firmest things in the world. Yet the truth is that the two stretch and contract, while the one thing that never changes was light. In life there come days when what we believed firm begins to shake — health, circumstance, people, all change. In such days light teaches: even in a world where all things change, there is one standard that does not change, no matter who observes, where, or how. Only by holding that one unchanging thing can we measure the distance of all that shakes. What will you take for your light? That one unchanging yardstick will tell you your place amid everything that changes.

1Wonder

Throw a ball forward on a moving train, and to someone outside it travels at the train's speed plus the throw's. All our lives we knew speeds add this way. Yet light alone is different. However fast you run toward it, however fast you flee from it, light always approaches at the very same speed. Why does light alone refuse the arithmetic of adding and subtracting?

2🔭 The Inquiry

In the late nineteenth century scientists believed light spread through an invisible medium, the "ether," as sound rides air. If so, since the Earth moves through the ether, the speed of light should look different depending on the Earth's direction of motion. Michelson and Morley measured this with precision. The result stunned them: in every direction the speed of light was the same. No trace of ether. The most exquisite experiment returned the most baffling silence. No one could explain it.

3💡 The Turning Point

In 1905 Einstein flipped the premise. He asked: what if we take the unchanging speed of light not as a baffling result, but as a starting point? Light's speed is always constant, no matter who observes or how they move — accept this as a fundamental rule of nature, and astonishing consequences follow one after another. For light's speed to be the same for all, a fast-moving person's time must slow and their length must shrink. That is, what does not change is light; instead, time and space stretch and contract. The time and space we believed absolute in fact bend and stretch, while the one yardstick that never changes was the speed of light. The firmest standard in the world was not the spacetime we stand upon, but that light.

4🌍 In the World
  • That GPS pins position accurately is because it takes the constant speed of light (radio waves) as its standard. Only with an unchanging yardstick can distance be measured.
  • When we look at a star, we see not its now but light that left it years, or tens of thousands of years, ago. Because light's speed is fixed, to see the far sky is to see the far past.
  • The immense power of nuclear energy, too, springs from the relation of mass and energy that follows from the constancy of light — the energy of the speed of light squared, asleep within a little matter.
