📖 Origin of the Hanja
The surname of Confucius (孔子) — among the most famous in East Asia. Korean Kong descends from Kong So (孔紹), the 53rd-generation descendant of Confucius, who fled Yuan China to Goryeo during King Chungnyeol's reign and was enfeoffed as Hoewon-gun. The single ancestral seat: Gokbu (曲阜) — Confucius's own hometown. The hanja "孔" originally meant opening/passage but extended to "great, penetrating." Korean Kong is virtually the only East Asian lineage with a clear direct line to Confucius.
🏯 Main Clans (Bongwan)
※ Bongwan refers to the ancestral home where the founder settled. Same surname, different bongwan = different clan branch.
