Are the Rites for the Dead Superstition, or for the Hearts of the Living?
Since the dead can no longer know, is our careful keeping of funeral and memorial rites a vain superstition, or the setting-right of the living heart toward life and death?
Ritual is the careful ordering of life and death. Life is a person's beginning, death a person's end; only when both beginning and end are well provided is the way of being human complete.
This question split how to understand the rites for the dead. Xunzi, though he denied the mystery of Heaven and spirits, saw funeral and memorial rites as the essence of human culture — not magic that moves the dead but ritual that orders the feeling of the living and makes the human humane. This runs of a piece with Confucius, who answered the disciple Zai Yu's "is the three-year mourning not too long?" with "if your heart is at ease, then do so," and with Zengzi's teaching to attend carefully to the end and honor the distant ancestors. From the other side Mozi criticized lavish funerals as a waste of goods, and the Daoist Zhuangzi passed beyond the very form of ritual as contrivance. Are the rites of death a culture for the living, or empty formality to be abolished — Xunzi stood most composedly on "ritual that sets up the living heart."
In an age that easily takes the forms of mourning as outdated, Xunzi's question — the rites of death set right the living heart — reminds us that the devotion of farewell holds up not only the departed but those who remain.
