When I first read this short novel, the obsessive depiction of cannibalism—eating human flesh—choked the breath from me with its dread. Yet the moment I grasped Lu Xun's insight, a shudder ran through me. The cannibalism he speaks of is not the literal eating of flesh, but the old traditions and conventions that oppress and exploit human beings—cannibalism as metaphor. The sharp sentences that expose the bare face of a hypocritical society through the mouth of a madman pierce our innermost selves across the ages. The final cry—save the children—will echo in your ears long after.
