Confronting the overwhelming, seductive charisma of Satan, who rises in rebellion against the Almighty, I felt both confusion and a strange intellectual pleasure. Into this majestic epic Milton engraves the greatness of free will, of choosing for oneself even at the cost of pain, over blind obedience. Though paradise, peaceful, is lost, it read like the sublime tragedy and dazzling declaration of independence of a human being who has, at last, become the full master of his own life.
