📖 Origin of the Hanja

The mountainous spine of the Korean peninsula. The hanja "江原" means "the source of rivers" — the Han, Nakdong, and Geum rivers all originate from Gangwon's mountains. Named in 1395 when Joseon's Taejo combined Gangneung-do and Gyoju-do, taking one character from each. Elevated to Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province in June 2023. Host of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Korea's deepest nature — Seoraksan, the East Sea coast, and DMZ forests all lie in Gangwon.
