學 (to learn) + 生 (to live) — "one who learns while living"

📖 Origin of the Hanja

The hanja "學" shows a child (子) under a roof (宀) being taught classics (爻) by two hands (臼) — schooling. "生" depicts a plant emerging from soil — to live, to grow. 學生 = "one who learns while growing". The opening line of the Analects defines it: "Is it not a delight to learn and rehearse?" In an age of lifelong learning, a student is not only the young — but anyone whose learning has not stopped.

"The 生 in 學生 means "alive". One who stops learning is not a student but a graduate. Only one who remains a student for life becomes a true master."
