Original Name: Oak
The initial name for the project, which James Gosling began in 1991, was Oak. This choice was directly inspired by an oak tree he frequently observed outside his office window. However, just prior to the official launch of the project in 1995, a significant issue arose. It was discovered that a company already in operation, named Oak Technology, had previously registered the exact same trademark, making the original name unusable for the new venture.
Coffee in the Conference Room
The team engaged in intense discussions to find a new name for the project. Several options were considered, including Silk, DNA, Lyric, Pepper, and Java. The ultimate decision was heavily influenced by the everyday atmosphere within their conference room. For a team accustomed to regularly drinking coffee sourced from Java Island while they worked, the name 'Java' felt the most natural, familiar, and accessible choice. The new name was officially announced to the public on May 23, 1995.
Why Java Island Coffee?
Indonesia's Java Island has held a reputation as a significant coffee-producing region since the 17th century, a legacy that began during the era of Dutch colonization. Consequently, in American English, the term 'java' quickly evolved into a widely recognized slang word for 'coffee.' The chosen name, therefore, perfectly captured the pervasive caffeine reliance that characterized many Silicon Valley developers throughout the 1990s, reflecting their daily work culture.
Awakening Through Hanja
The Hanja character '覺' (gak) is formed by combining '學' (hak), meaning 'to learn,' with '見' (gyeon), meaning 'to see.' This combination signifies 'to learn and see,' or more broadly, 'to realize' or 'to awaken.' This character is consistently used in various terms such as '각성' (awakening), '자각' (self-awareness), and '청각' (the sense of hearing). In a metaphorical sense, much like how coffee stimulates and awakens the mind, the Java programming language played a pivotal role in 'awakening' web development throughout the 1990s, ushering in a new era of innovation.
