Perfect happiness is a kind of contemplative activity.

🌿The Lineage — How the Answers Split

Aristotle's answer — that the contemplative life is highest — became a seed of the West's long debate over the ideal of life. The Middle Ages carried it on, placing the contemplative life (vita contemplativa) of beholding God above the active life (vita activa). But the civic humanists of the Renaissance objected — action and participation for the community are the truly human life. Modern Marx overturned it entirely: the point is not to interpret the world but to change it. Is beholding higher, or doing? Over this question a two-thousand-year lineage split.
