溫故知新 Old wisdom, today’s insight — ONGO
Who Goes Further — One Who Knows, One Who Loves, or One Who Delights?
To know a work, to love it, to delight in it — which of these carries one through to the end of it?
One who knows it is not equal to one who loves it; one who loves it is not equal to one who delights in it.
Confucius' ranking — "the one who delights over the one who knows" — became a template for the Eastern ideal of work and learning. Zhuangzi pressed further, seeing delight as the very state of wu-wei, absorption emptied of effort. But Xunzi warned from the other side — before leaning on delight, one must shape oneself, even forcibly, through ritual and repeated discipline. Far to the West, Aristotle happened upon a kindred answer: the person in whom virtue has become second nature does the right thing "with delight." East and West split alike over the difference between one who acts by force and one who acts by joy.
The more an age tries to manage motivation and engagement, the more this question — whether one has passed beyond knowing into delight — decides the sustainability of work and life.
Confucius ranked learning and work in steps.
📝I, Too, Stand Before It
Confucius ranked learning and work in steps. To know is to grasp from outside; to love is to have the heart inclined; to delight is the place where the work and I become one. Knowing lets go when it tires, but delight does not know weariness. Yet I read this delight not as easy pleasure but as the deep absorption that comes after long loving. Have I stopped at knowing my work, gone as far as loving it, or reached the place of delight? I stand somewhere among the three steps, before this question.
