Mastering the craft (arts) of one's work, and setting the heart on the Way it should serve — which comes first, and for the sake of which?

🌿The Lineage — How the Answers Split

Confucius' order — "set the heart on the Way before the arts" — hardened into an East Asian hierarchy of work and learning. Mencius carried it on, placing the cultivation of the heart above manual skill, and later Neo-Confucianism set the study of the Way above practical technique. But there were counters. Mozi and later "practical learning" prized concrete, beneficial skill as much as, sometimes more than, the Way. Zhuangzi answered differently still — the Way does not stand above craft but already dwells in the blade of the ox-carving butcher. The lineage split over the rank of Way and craft.

The more an age judges by technical mastery alone, the more this question — toward what aspiration the skill is aimed — restores direction to work.

Yet last is not least — only with the roots of aspiration, virtue, and benevolence can the craft serve the person rather than rule them, letting one roam at ease within it. I understand this is a question of order. Have I so honed my skill that I forgot what the skill is toward? I stand somewhere between craft and Way, before this question.
