If death cannot touch me while I live, and I am already gone the moment it touches, can death truly be something to fear?
Death is nothing to us. While we exist, death is not; while death is, we are not.
This question split ancient thought over how to face death. Epicurus dismantled fear by logic, holding that death, being merely the end of sensation, can never meet us, and his follower Lucretius spread it in verse. From the other side Plato, in the "Phaedo," argued the soul's immortality and saw death as release from a prison — so the two roads out of fear ran opposite: one, "when dead there is nothing, so it is well"; the other, "the soul remains, so it is well." The Stoics took yet another path, teaching acceptance of death as nature's order. Is death extinction or passage, and either way how to be freed from fear — this question became the first fork on which every later philosophy of death has stood.
For us who so often cloud today's light by grieving the end in advance, Epicurus's calm arithmetic — death has not yet met you — makes the fear a little smaller and today a little larger.
