The lineage split over the tie between livelihood and heart. Mencius held that for ordinary people material security is the ground of morality, demanding that rulers first secure the people's means — a view that unexpectedly touches Marx's later insight that material conditions shape consciousness. Yet the Stoics and Cynics pressed the opposite — Diogenes lived in a jar needing nothing, and Epictetus held the freedom of the heart whole regardless of possessions. Must the heart stand first, or must there first be bread? The question remains open still.
