📜 THE VERSE

The Self is not won by a weak heart, nor by heedlessness, nor by effort without direction. But for the wise who strives by these right means, the Self enters the home of the source.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Does my effort have strength and direction, or does it scatter between laziness and vagueness?

📝Reflection

This verse nails down that we should not mistake awakening for something sentimental. The Self is not won by a weak heart, by heedlessness, or by 'effort without direction.' The third is especially sharp — to strive without direction only burns up strength, like a boat rowed with no destination. What is needed is both strength and direction. It is where the Buddha said to the last, 'Strive on without heedlessness,' the place the old saying of cutting and polishing points to. A gentle heart is precious, but the deep path also needs firm steps that carry a direction.
