Reading the thought of Shang Yang, who forged the state of Qin into a great power amid the chaos of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States period, I grow cold at his unsparing realism. This classic of Legalist thought sets aside morality and sentiment entirely, asking only how a system should be designed for the single aim of "a rich state and a strong army." In this book I see not merely ancient political science, but the painful resolve required to fundamentally renew a stagnant organization or life. To break an old shell, one sometimes needs principles ruthless enough to seem merciless.
