When I first read the Grimm tales in their raw, folk-original form, I was captivated by a primal chill quite unlike the lovely endings I knew as a child. The insight of the stories the Brothers Grimm gathered lies in showing human resilience: abandoned children who survive, by wit and resolve, in the terrifying unknown of the forest.
