The Histories
How can we recognize the seeds of decline hidden behind monumental success?
📝ONGO's Reflection
Reading this book that traces how Rome became master of the world, I found my eye drawn less to the record of triumph than to the warning of decline. Through his insight that political forms move in cycles, Polybius coolly points out that all prosperity may in the end lead to corruption and arrogance. It is a majestic record that makes me ask how fleeting an individual's glory is before the vast wheel of history, and what we must guard against as we live.
"Every state inevitably undergoes a process of growth, zenith, and decline."Polybius, The Histories
"모든 국가는 필연적으로 성장하고, 정점에 달하며, 그리고 쇠퇴하는 과정을 거친다."
