When I first read this short story by Yeonam Park Ji-won, I slapped my knee at the cutting wit that mocks the pretensions of the so-called distinguished families. The author's insight, stripping bare the true faces of the yangban (the aristocratic class), lofty in appearance yet sunk in incompetence, still holds true today. It pierces, with bracing relish, that true worth lies not in paper-thin rank or empty honor, but in the practical ability to carve out one's own life by one's own strength. It is a sharp mirror that makes us look back at our own society, losing its essence while trapped in empty formality.
