DAY 101

Is There a Vast Energy to Be Nourished Within the Body?

first asked by Mencius
기원전 4세기, 전국시대
THE QUESTION ITSELF

If a vast, firm energy that fills body and mind can be nourished — with what do I nourish it, and with what do I starve it?

THE QUESTION · ORIGINAL
我善養吾浩然之氣
📜 WHERE THE QUESTION WAS BORN

I am good at nourishing my vast, flowing energy.

🌿The Lineage — How the Answers Split

Mencius' question — nourishing the vast energy — sits within the lineage divided over body and qi. Confucianism saw qi as a moral force nourished by righteousness, while Daoism took the same qi as the root of life, governed by yielding to nature's flow, developing it into nurture and breath practice. Chinese medicine read the flow of this qi as bodily health itself. In far Greece too the Stoics held a notion of the life-breath (pneuma) filling the body. But modern Western medicine pushed this aside, reducing qi to matter and nerve. Is what fills the body a nourishable energy, or a measurable matter? The lineage split.

♾️ WHY IT STILL LIVES

The more an age reads the body only in numbers and data, the more this question — with what to nourish the energy that fills it — asks after the source of vitality.

💡 TL;DR

When a disciple asked where Mencius' strength came from, he answered that he nourishes the vast, flowing energy (haoran zhi qi).

📝I, Too, Stand Before It

When a disciple asked where Mencius' strength came from, he answered that he nourishes the vast, flowing energy (haoran zhi qi). It is supremely great and firm, filling the space between heaven and earth; it grows only by the steady accumulation of righteousness and withers at a single shameful act. It does not swell by being forced. I read this question as seeing the body not as mere matter but as a vessel of energy. Is the energy filling my body and mind now growing, or withering? With what do I nourish it? I stand before this question too.
