Does the Heart Know What Reason Does Not?
Truth that argument cannot reach — does the heart know it by another road?
We know truth not by reason alone but also by the heart; it is by the heart that we know first principles.
Pascal's insight that "the heart knows the first principles" cracked reason-centered modern philosophy. In the same century Descartes set clear and distinct reason as the standard of knowledge, but Pascal noted that the first principles reason stands on come from a faculty other than reason. This question ran into Romanticism, which restored intuition and feeling beyond reason as sources of knowledge, and Kierkegaard painted faith as an existential leap rather than an argument. From the other side, the heirs of the Enlightenment warned that the heart's knowing is only another name for bias. Whether reason or heart lies nearer to truth still flows in two streams.
In an age that would judge all by data and argument, Pascal's question — whether the heart knows first — keeps us from forgetting the other grain of human knowing.
Pascal, a brilliant mathematician, knew the power of reason better than most.
📝I, Too, Stand Before It
Pascal, a brilliant mathematician, knew the power of reason better than most. Yet he held that reason alone cannot reach first principles. That we know without proof that space has three dimensions, that time flows — such knowing belongs not to reason but to the heart. I read this not as belittling reason but as honestly drawing its limit. The knowing that trusts a loved one, the knowing that senses what is right — I cannot resolve them fully by argument. Before the place the heart knows first, I stand too.
