When I first came to this ancient history, the despair of ten thousand Greek mercenaries stranded in the heart of enemy territory choked the breath from me. Yet Xenophon's insight shines all the brighter in the moment of crisis. With every commander slaughtered, in the worst of all situations, the process by which they chose new leaders through democratic debate and fought their way thousands of kilometers through hostile land back to the sea is nothing short of wondrous. This great survival of a band of humans who lose neither reason nor courage amid extremity offers a blood-stirring emotion.
