I turned the pages expecting the catharsis of a revenge tale, but bit by bit my heart ached at the terrible solitude endured by the soul of Edmond Dantès. After an unjust imprisonment he gains vast wealth and power and carries out a perfect vengeance, yet the arrogance of regarding himself as the executor of providence finally breeds deep emptiness and remorse. Through its grand narrative, it weightily asks whether judgment carried out in the name of justice truly belongs to the human realm, and whether true salvation lies not in revenge but in forgiveness.
