On What Does Lasting Friendship Rest?
Does lasting friendship rest on shared interest, or on each other's goodness?
Friendship can exist only among the good.
Cicero discoursed on friendship while honoring a dead friend. True friendship, he held, is possible only among the good — a friendship tied for gain vanishes with the gain, but one bound in respect for each other's character not even death can sever. "A friend is another self, and a dead friend lives on in friendship." The question carries Aristotle's three friendships forward: only the friendship of virtue endures. In the East too, the friendship of Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya — knowing each other beyond interest — was long handed down as a model of true fellowship. But the modern age asks back — perfectly good people are rare, so is friendship among us imperfect ones then false? Does friendship rest on virtue, or on time endured together?
In an age of ties bound and cut by interest, the insight that friendships making each other better endure gives direction.
