Is the Body a Weight the Soul Carries?
If the body is a weight the soul carries — is that weight a burden to be shed, or something to live with while it is borne?
This body is a weight upon the soul, and its penance.
Seneca's saying — the body is the soul's weight — sits within the lineage divided over the rank of body and spirit. The Stoics saw the body as something the soul carries, yet accepted it calmly as part of nature. This gaze joins Plato's "body is a prison," forming a tradition that raised spirit above body and flowed into medieval asceticism. But a long rebuttal followed. Aristotle bound soul and body into one, and modern Nietzsche overturned the hierarchy that set spirit above body — "I am body entirely, and nothing besides." Is the body a weight to carry, or the whole of my very self? The lineage split.
As an age grows at once the fancy of overcoming the body and the sense that the body is everything, the question "is the body a burden or my very self?" weighs anew.
The Stoic Seneca, in a letter to a friend, calls the body a weight upon the soul.
📝I, Too, Stand Before It
The Stoic Seneca, in a letter to a friend, calls the body a weight upon the soul. The soul pressed by the body is confined, but philosophy lifts it to contemplate the cosmos beyond the body. Yet Seneca does not bid us hate the body — only not to live crushed by it as if it were everything. I read this question as asking where the center of gravity lies between body and spirit. Do I live wholly pressed by the body's demands, or bear the body while keeping room to behold something wider? I stand before this weight, and this question.
