The Flowers of Evil
Can we find beauty even in ugliness and despair?
📝ONGO's Reflection
When I first read this collection, I was breathless at Baudelaire's audacity in shattering the traditional standards of beauty. Instead of fragrant flowers or clear skies, he draws his poetry out of the city's back alleys, of melancholy, even of a rotting corpse. His gaze, facing even the darkest and most diseased parts of life and coaxing a strange beauty from within them, widened my shallow worldview. To us who chase only the perfect and the splendid, it teaches with aching force that pain and ugliness, too, are truthful fragments of life.
